Skills and Drills
Erin's Thoughts

I have taught and attended many different camps and clinics. The following are some useful skills, drills and games I have picked up along the way.

GAMES
Speedball
Speedball is a game that has been enjoyed by students at Toronto schools for years now but I had never heard of it until I attended OELC.
Equiptment-
  • soccerball (or another ball around the same size or a bit smaller)
  • two bowling pins
  • a large field
  • twelve pillons
  • two hulla hoops

Set Up-
  • Place bowling pins inside hulla hoops at both ends of the field.
  • Set up the pillons in a square around each bowling pin so that the pin is in the middle. Size of box can vary depending on age group of kids. Well skilled kids need a larger box. Do the same thing with the same distances at both ends of the field.
  • Set up a large boarder around the field using the remaining four pillons. These will represent the out of bounds.

Rules-
  • There are two teams
  • There is a jump-ball at the center of the field (basketball-style).
  •  If the ball is caught in the air the team can pass by throwing the ball to each other. The game then looks like european handball (maximum of two steps with the ball) until the ball is dropped. Then the team must kick the ball until it is kicked into the air and someone catches it.
  • If the ball goes out of bounds it is thrown in by the opposite team using a soccer throw in.
  • You can score by either throwing the ball or kicking the ball at the bowling pin and knocking it over from outside of the four pillons surrounding the pin.
  • There is a goalie that protects each pin but they must stay outside of the hula hoop. They are the only ones allowed to touch a ball that is inside the pillon area.
  •  When the players catch on to the game add a second ball.

SKILLS AND DRILLS
Close Out (Basketball)
You need a minimum of three kids to do this drill. There is no maximum.

Line up the kids in three lines so that it resembles this:

L                    M                          R
L                    M                          R
L                    M                          R
L                    M                          R

The kids in the middle will do foot fires(moving feet fast and low to the ground as if the ground was really hot). Have a leader at the front that points what direction they are to go. They will then do a proper closeout and boxout to the person infront of them. They will return to the middle as soon as they have done doing this. The lines then switch so all kids have a chance at being in the middle.

Rapid Fire (Baseball)
Materials Needed:
  • ten tennis balls
  • a baseball bat

The coach stands about twenty feet away from the player and has him or her get into the ready position. The coach hits the first tennis ball at the player at slow speed and hits the next one as soon as the ball is thrown.. Have another player on the team stand about three feet to either side of you so that the player can throw the ball to them. If the player is slow getting the ball out of the glove to throw it start hitting the balls before he or she throws it.  Hit the balls harder each time and have each player keep track of how many balls they successfull field.

Shell Drill (Basketball)

This drill can be done 5 on 5 or 3 on 3.

There are three teams, one on offence, one on defence and one waiting at the sidelines.

The offencive team scores a point when a wing drives over the top of their defender into the key. They must have both feet inside the key to get the point.  They also score a point when a wing drives and kicks it out to another player to take a 3 pointer. If the shot hits the rim its a point. They also get a point if they can score a layup.

The defensive team gets a point if they take a charge. If the defensive team steals the ball they become the offensive team on the same basket. First team to 3, 5, or anyother number you set wins. The winning team gets subbed off while the losing team must play against the waiting team.
